SANGAMON TOWNSHIP CEMETERIES

CEMETERY INFORMATION

 Cemeteries in Sangamon Township are:

Presently there are five active cemeteries in Sangamon Township. The cemeteries are: 

  • Camp Creek
  • Ingram
  • Mackey
  • Madden
  • Ross-Hughes


To be buried in a Sangamon Township Cemetery, the person must have lived in Sangamon Township for a period of five years. Immediate family members outside of the township may purchase grave lots upon approval of the Sexton.

CEMETERY GUIDELINES AND GENERAL INFORMATION

(The following applies to all Sangamon Township Cemeteries)

Burial Fees and Requirements

  • Fee for one lot is $400.  Non-residents the cost is $550 per lot.
  • Two Cremations of the same family are allowed on one lot.
  • Plotting or locating fee for the grave is $40 for first meeting with the Sexton, a fee of $25 for each additional meeting with the Sexton will be required.
  • Preparing the deed fee is $40.
  • Fee for digging vault graves is $650 with an additional fee of $150 to level and seed the grave.  Cremation grave burials have a cost of $300 per burial.  The Sexton has the right to change the cost of the grave opening depending on the contractor.
  • Burials on Sundays and or Holidays have an additional fee of $150.  All burials require notification of the Sexton 48 hours in advance.  On Monday holidays the Sexton must be notified by Friday morning preceding Monday.
  • Fee for locating the area for a grave marker foundation is $50 and will be marked off by the Sexton.  No foundations can be installed without the approval of the Sexton.
  • Copies of deeds are recorded by the Sexton:  one copy is kept in the Sexton’s possession and one copy is in the possession of the person(s) purchasing the lot and one is kept in the township office.  It is highly suggested that the deed of the lot owner be kept in a safe, accessible place that can be easily located at the time of burial.  It is the responsibility of the lot owner to demonstrate ownership of the grave lot.
  • Exception to the above fees would be in the case of the burial of a baby which will be at the discretion of the Sexton.
  • Any lots not used can be sold back to Sangamon Township at the sum the lot was purchased.  Ownership of lots cannot be transferred to any party outside of the family.  Any transfer of a lot must be authorized by the Sexton.  A new deed will be required on transfers at a cost of $75.  Previous deeds will be nulled.
  • All fees are subject to an annual review by the Sangamon Township board.  The fees listed above are for the year 2024.
  • The funeral director in charge will be responsible for payments regarding grave openings.
  • The Cemetery Sexton reserves the right to make adjustments to the exact location of any burial lot at the time of monument installation or grave opening.
  • Funeral director will provide the Sexton with the dimension of the urn for burial if it is a cremation service.

  • The funeral director must provide a temporary marker if a permanent marker is not in place.
  • At the time of a grave opening, a disposition of human remains is required (Burial Permit).   If a funeral home is used this is standard procedure.

CEMETERY RULES

  • Cemeteries close at sundown.
  • Solar night lights may not be placed into the ground and must be mounted on the monument or their foundation.
  • Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Veteran’s Day, decorations on these days are allowed on the grounds for fourteen days.  After fourteen days the decorations will be removed.  Other than these dates no decorations are allowed from March 1st to November 30th.
  • Christmas decoration must be removed by March 1.  
  • No one shall drive on the grass, and all vehicles, except with consent of the Sexton.
  • Chairs, settees and architectural objects are considered incompatible to the beauty, dignity and repose of the Cemetery and are therefore forbidden and will be removed from the lots without notice.
  • Hanging baskets and monument top decorations will be allowed all year long.  Shepards hooks not being used will be removed.
  • No glass containers are allowed due to the danger of broken glass.
  • Digging without permission of the Sexton is prohibited.
  • Plantings of any kind must be approved by the Sexton.  Existing plantings that have become too large or have become unsightly may be removed only with the permission and guidance of the Sexton.
  • No coping, fence or enclosure of any kind will be permitted on burial lots, nor any lines of demarcation.
  • Any objects scattered on the graves or lots are inconsistent with the proper keeping of the grounds will not be permitted.
  • The cemetery is not responsible for any flowers/decorations left at a grave site after a burial.

FOUNDATION, MARKERS, HEADSTONES, MAUSOLEUMS

  • All monuments shall be installed/removed by a professional monument company.
  • No monument shall be set other than under the direction of the Sexton.
  • No more than one monument shall be erected on any one lot.  The exception would be when the monuments are flush with the ground for multiple cremation burials.
  • No above ground mausoleums are permitted.
  • No monuments may be installed at the foot of the grave space.
  • No Ledger type markers are allowed.  (Ledgers are described as flat or horizontal grave markers that cover the entire grave space.
  • All costs of installation or removal of any type of monument will be paid solely by the family ordering such work.
  • All equipment being used in the construction of a monument must be driven on roads made of ¾ inch plywood or multiple layers of depending on ground conditions.
  • All areas where removal takes place will be returned to its original condition.  All debris must be removed and disposed of away from the cemetery.
  • All monument foundations must be dug out 36” the entire dimension being poured and a six-bag liquid concrete used with no fillers.
  • All monuments must be in the monument line.  No monument may extend out onto the grave space or beyond monument lines.

DESTRUCTION OF CEMETERY PROPERTY

Any person who shall willfully destroy, mutilate, deface or injure and tomb, monument, stone, tree, shrub, signage, or any ornament shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall, upon conviction, be punished by fine.
